Pocket Compass Guide

My name is Kornelia Takacs. I have been collecting pocket compasses since 1998.

When I purchased my first antique compass I had no idea what a rewarding and
long journey I had set out on. I spent over two decades collecting and researching
these wonderful instruments and their history.

The first edition of my book, Compass Chronicles, describes over two
hundred different pocket compasses with illustrations and hundreds
of photographs. (Published by Schiffer Books)

compass chronicles

When I began researching antique pocket compasses in the late 1990’s, I realized that there was no definitive published work to help guide new collectors. As I continued to collect compasses I tried to find out as much information about them as possible.

This beautifully designed, large, hard cover book is a guide through the wide range of pocket compasses, with colorful illustrations and detailed descriptions throughout. It covers various different types of magnetic compasses such as escape, wrist, fob and different military compasses.

The majority of compasses described date from the 1850’s to the 1940’s. Early examples reach back to the late 1700s. I hope that my book will be enjoyed by readers who find these unique instruments interesting and feel compelled to find out more. I also hope that it will be valued by serious collectors who seek information about specific models.
